Roll up, roll up: 10 reasons to explore SEQ’s agricultural shows
By Ashleigh Howarth
There’s nothing quite like a true taste of Queensland country life - prize livestock, woodchop finals and fresh-from-the-paddock flavours combining to bring the bush to the city in a vibrant burst of colour, character and community spirit.
For many regions, agricultural shows are a longstanding tradition, having entertained crowds and generations for more than a century.
With shows happening across Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, the Scenic Rim, Lockyer Valley, Somerset, and Moreton Bay, here’s your guide to the best upcoming events, and 10 reasons why you should add them to your must-visit list.
Mouthwatering food
Whether it’s a deep-fried dagwood dog drenched in tomato sauce, a bucket of over-salted hot chips, a steak sandwich fresh off the barbecue, a big tub of pink fairy floss, sticky toffee apples, freshly baked scones and cakes from the local Country Women’s Association, or an ice-cold slushie, there’s one thing for sure - you’ll never go hungry at a country show!
Thrill rides and games for everyone
No show is complete without the thrills, excitement, flashing lights, pumping music and endless fun of Sideshow Alley!
From gentle rides perfect for little ones to heart-pounding attractions for thrill-seekers, there’s something for everyone.
Popular family favourites include dodgem cars, the Cyclone, Scrambler, mini roller coasters, ghost trains, swings, Ferris wheels, giant slides, pirate ships, teacups, merry-go-rounds, jumping castles, train rides and funhouses.
And don’t forget the carnival games - laughing clowns, fishing, milk cans, mini basketball, archery, and ring toss give everyone the chance to win some cool prizes.
Stocking up on showbags
You can’t visit a show without wandering through the Showbag Pavilion, with rows of colourful bags bursting with lollies, chocolate, chips, toys, gadgets, beauty products, sporting memorabilia, and more.
While there may be hundreds to choose from, some favourites never change, like the Bertie Beetle showbags. They are still one of Australia’s most iconic and affordable picks, often selling out before the day is done.
Lots of adorable farm animals
Agricultural shows bring the country to the city, so you can bet there will be animals everywhere!
One minute you’re patting and feeding lambs in the animal nursery and the next you’re watching the sheepdogs herd sheep, horses majestically jumping over rails, admiring the cattle, cheering on the fluffiest pooch in the dog show, exploring the many different birds in the poultry pavilion, taking pictures of the kids on a pony ride, or gasping at pythons at a reptile show.
Live music and stage shows
Country shows often feature local bands, performers, and cultural acts on smaller stages throughout the day.
From toe-tapping folk tunes to contemporary music, juggling acts or roving stilt walkers, there’s always something happening beyond the main arena to entertain all ages.
Market stalls packed with treasures
These shows are the perfect opportunity to support local farmers, growers, producers, and artisans so you can take a little piece of the country home with you.
Think local honey, homemade jams, fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade jewellery, boutique clothing, arts and crafts, plants, and other one-of-a-kind finds.
Woodchopping competitions
A highlight at many shows, the woodchop is a true test of strength and skill.
It’s loud, intense, and always a crowd favourite as you watch the competitors go head-to-head as they swing their axes and saws with powerful and precise movements as they race to split the timber.
Hands-on workshops and demonstrations
Many shows run interactive workshops or demonstrations where visitors can try something new, so you can experience the skills and traditions of country life firsthand.
Sometimes these can include cooking demonstrations, craft-making, blacksmithing, and plenty of kids’ activities.
Admiring the talented locals
You can bet there’s always a big shed dedicated to ribbons and certificates, celebrating the amazing work of locals competing for that coveted first prize.
From bakers and quilters to photographers and gardeners, it’s inspiring to see the skill, creativity, and dedication on display, with every entry telling a story of hard work and pride.
Main arena madness
At a country show, the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down – it only gets bigger, louder and brighter! The main arena becomes the place to be, packed with families and friends ready to be amazed.
Horse and dog competitions, sheep mustering, camel races, rodeos, monster trucks, daredevil motorbike stunts and jaw-dropping tricks keep the crowd entertained before finishing with a spectacular fireworks display that lights up the night sky.
