Discover beaches, bites, and boutiques in Wynnum

By Ashleigh Howarth

Overlooking the sparkling waters of Moreton Bay, Wynnum is a coastal haven that draws beach lovers, foodies, bargain browsers, art enthusiasts, and outdoor explorers alike.

With golden beaches along the stunning foreshore, a heritage seaside pool, a vibrant cafe and dining scene, boutique shopping, and a thriving arts community, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxed day trip or an unforgettable staycation.

Located roughly 16 kilometres from Brisbane CBD, Wynnum is accessible by car, bus, or train.

I have long been a huge fan of Wynnum, but while housesitting for a friend, I had the opportunity to explore more of this beautiful suburb.

Here are some of my favourite spots you simply have to ‘sea’ for yourself!

Splash, play and explore at the foreshore

If you love the great outdoors, you’re going to fall in love with the Wynnum foreshore as it’s one of Brisbane’s (and mine) top spots for walking, running, cycling, scootering, swimming, sunbaking, picnicking, fishing, wildlife spotting, and soaking up that glorious salty sea air.

For families, the fun starts at Pandanus Beach, a calm stretch of golden sand and shallow waters perfect for splashing about, and continues just up the path at the Wynnum Whale Park, where water-spouting whales, spray zones, tipping buckets and toddler-friendly play areas promise hours of giggles.

There’s also forts, climbing nets, slides, swings, and rockers for kids to let their imaginations run wild in the adjacent playground.

The historic tidal wading pool – which fills naturally with seawater at high tide – is the perfect place for young and old to take a tip when temperatures start to soar, and there’s even a mini twisty slide for the little ones.

If you’re planning on making a day of it by the water, there’s plenty of picnic shelters, shady seating areas, and grassy patches to throw out the picnic rug – all perfect spots for supervising the kids or relaxing with a good book.

Plus, there are multiple barbecues if you’re keen to whip up some snags in bread.

Fitness lovers will adore the breezy 4km esplanade walk which can take you down to the neighbouring suburb of Manly, with sparkling views across to Moreton Island. The walk is so beautiful it doesn’t matter what time of the day you go for a stroll, but I am a big fan of heading down at either sunrise or sunset.

And of course, a visit isn’t complete without exploring the much-loved Wynnum Jetty, a popular fishing spot where you can chat to locals about the catch of the day, or throw your own line in.

You might even get lucky and see some of the area’s local wildlife including dolphins, turtles, several types of birds, or even a dugong if you’re lucky!

Treat your tastebuds with these culinary delights

Wynnum’s bayside charm isn’t just about the water views and relaxed atmosphere - it’s also home to a growing collection of cafes, bakeries, coffee shops, restaurants, pubs, dessert bars, and much more!

I had the pleasure of visiting many of these eateries while housesitting because I had no desire to cook on my mini staycation.
