All aboard: Discover fjords, scenic railways and Vikings in Flåm

By Ashleigh Howarth

Even when you’re surrounded by Norway’s jaw-dropping scenery, it’s hard to believe a place this beautiful actually exists.

Famous for its towering snow-capped mountains that plunge straight into the deep blue fjords, as well as its lush green valleys, cascading waterfalls and picture-perfect villages with red storybook cottages dotting the shoreline, this part of the world feels almost…. out of this world.

One of the best ways to soak up all this beauty is by experiencing three Norwegian treasures: a serene fjord cruise, a scenic rail journey, and the chance to step back in time at an authentic Viking Village. All of this can be enjoyed from the charming village of Flåm - a tiny but spectacular town nestled roughly halfway between Bergen and Oslo.

If Scandinavia is on your bucket list, here are five reasons why this unforgettable journey deserves a spot on your itinerary.

You can cruise down a UNESCO-listed fjord

With more than 1,000 fjords scattered across Norway, choosing which one to explore can feel overwhelming.

Thankfully, Flåm makes it easy, providing access to a collection of stunning fjords just waiting to be discovered nearby.

The highlight is the UNESCO-listed Nærøyfjord - a dramatic, narrow fjord surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls. Stretching 17 kilometres in length and narrowing to just 250 metres at its tightest point, it’s a landscape that feels otherworldly.

Visitors can also explore the breathtaking Aurlandsfjord, or extend their journey to the iconic Geirangerfjord and the scenic Oslofjord. Each fjord offers unique landscapes, unforgettable views, and experiences that perfectly showcase Norway’s natural beauty.

With so much beauty on both side of the fjord, you’re camera roll is sure to fill up quickly.

Take one of the most scenic train trips in the world

The Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana) is renowned as one of the most beautiful train journeys on earth - and it’s easy to see why.

The two-hour round-trip travels 20 kilometres from Flåm up the mountain to the station of Myrdal, which sits 867 metres above sea level.

As the train winds through the steep and narrow Flåm Valley, travellers are treated to jaw-dropping views of towering peaks, foaming waterfalls, and tiny mountain farms clinging to the cliffs.

It’s also an engineering marvel, as the Flåm Railway is one of the steepest standard-gauge lines in the world, with most of the route running on a 5.5 percent gradient.

One of the standout highlights of the journey is the stop at Kjosfossen waterfall, a powerful 93-metre cascade that can only be reached by train. Here, passengers can step off the train, snap photos, and experience the waterfall up close- although the train only stops for around five minutes, so you’ll need to be quick.

At Myrdal Station, travellers can connect to the main Oslo-Bergen railway line, admire the panoramic mountain scenery, or even go hiking in the surrounding alpine terrain if you’re planning on staying a little longer.

Learn about Norwegian folklore

While standing on the viewing platform at Kjosfossen waterfall, keep an eye out for a mysterious figure emerging from the forest.

Dressed in red with long flowing hair, she performs a haunting Norwegian folk song, bringing the local legend to life for visitors.

Known as the Huldra, this enchanting character is said to lure travellers into the woods with her beauty and song.

Step back in time at a Viking Village

For travellers wanting to add a touch of history to their adventure, there’s the option to visit an authentic Viking Village that offers a glimpse into what life was like 1000 years ago.

Accessible via shuttle bus, visitors are taken to Gudvangen where they can explore the Viking village of Njardarheimr, meaning “the home dedicated to the northern god Njord.”

Here you can wander through traditional huts, try archery or axe throwing, and enjoy stories brought vividly to life by Vikings who continue to live the Viking lifestyle today.

It’s a hands-on experience that makes the history and culture of the Viking Age unforgettable.

Visit the Flåm Railway Museum and nearby shops

Located right beside the train station, the Flåm Railway Museum is well worth a visit.

The museum shares the fascinating story behind the construction of the famous Flåm Railway, including the incredible engineering challenges involved in building one of Europe’s steepest railway lines. Through historic photos, old locomotives and interactive displays, visitors can discover how this remarkable railway came to life in such dramatic terrain. Best of all, admission is free.

If you’re looking to grab a bite to eat or do a little shopping, there are several options within easy walking distance of the station. The cosy Flåm Bakery is a popular stop, serving freshly baked bread, sandwiches, sweet buns, Danish pastries, cakes, brioche and biscuits.

You’ll also find a handful of souvenir shops nearby where you can pick up a keepsake to remember your time in Flåm, from Viking-themed gifts to locally made crafts inspired by the surrounding fjords.
